COMMENTS

1. The reference mode seem to show a goal seeking behavior. What kind of archetype do you expect for a goal seeking behavior?
2. Why is the a relationship between blood transfusions and people with AIDS? Do most AIDS people need blood transfusions? Similarly, why are there mishandled needles?
3. Similarly, the use of contraceptives is not clear. Do they use contraceptives is they have AIDS?
4. The archetype that you focused on does involve two positive feedback loops but is it really a success to the successful? What is success and what is being deprived from the other sector? Besides, the behavior of the reference mode does not seem to point to a success to the successful archetype.

1. Describe the problem and discuss problem conceptualization with graphs

    • As seen in the graph that there is a continuous increase with people getting infected with AIDS worldwide, that could lead to death due to AIDS.
2. Background of the problem
    • AIDS stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. It was first identified in the early 1980’s, since then there has been an unprecedented number of infected people. As of today there is still no cure for the said disease.
AIDS is caused by HIV. HIV is a virus that attacks the immune system cells. As the virus damages the cells the human body becomes more vulnerable to infections
which it will have a difficulty fighting off. HIV is related to unprotected intercourse, use of reused needles, having born with the disease. Steps have been done to
prevent the spread of HIV

3. Identify the likely variables to explain the problem
    • People Infected with AIDS
    • People infected with HIV
    • Death of People Infected with AIDS
    • Unprotected Sex
    • Use of Contraceptives
    • Partners with AIDS
    • Mishandled Needles
    • Blood Transfusion
    • People Injected with infected Needles
4. Causal Loop Diagram

Figure 2: Causal Loop Diagram
5. Identify the archetypes from the CLD
Success to the succesful is seen in the CLD. Success to the successful in short is giving rewards to the succcesful and giving penalties to those who do bad. In the CLD, those who do bad are the people who have unprotected sex, their penalty is getting HIV. The ones that use contraceptives are the successful and they are rewarded by not getting the virus.

6. Explain how the loops create the behavior patterns
Loop1.JPG
Figure 3: Loop 1

As seen in the first loop it is seen that is a negative feedback loop and limits the increase in the people that are infected with AIDS. Since there is still no cure for AIDS, in time the people infected will decrease. Although before it could happen it is seen that there are still relationships before a person gets infected. And there is a delay before a person actually dies of the disease.

Loop2.JPG
Figure 4: Loop 2
The second loop shows other factors that affect the increase of people getting infected through the use of mishandled needles that were used on patients which have AIDS. This contributes to the people infected with AIDS and is a reinforcing loop.

Loop3.JPG
Figure 5: Loop 3
Certain provisions were made to prevent people on getting infected with HIV which is the main cause of AIDS when not treated properly. People who are already infected and have partners should practice safe sex and use contraceptives like condoms to protect their partner from getting infected. It is still a reinforcing loop since eventhough there is a prevention, still unprotected sex is still prevalent resulting to increase in people getting infected with HIV.

7. Learnings
The propenents have learned that victims of AIDS are increasing every year. AIDS have a lot of factors that are reinforcing thus resulting in an increase of people getting infected. Factors around people getting infected with AIDS have positive relationship with each other. Policies seem not to affect the problem on increasing AIDS infections since as seen in the reference mode that it is still increasing eventhough policies have been in effect. In addition to the policies is that it differs from each country and depends on the economic growth of the country. Most people with AIDS are from remote areas or with high rural lands such as Africa.
