Chapter 1 : Background of the Study

1.1. Background
Deforestation is the depletion of naturally occurring forest by process such as logging or burning of trees. It is also referred to as converting the land area of forests and woodland to other uses, mostly residential and industrial purposes. It can be caused by land use and placing industrial areas, legal and illegal logging, increase of population in the area, agricultural development, mining, and urbanization (Hirano et al, 1995). Lots of effects could be caused by deforestation, one of the effects is climate change and increase soil erosion.
In the Philippines, it was said (mongabay.com) that during 1990 and 2005 lost a third of its forest cover. In addition to this, there was a 20 percent drop from 1990. It was attributed to legal and illegal logging, legal and illegal mining, and rural population expansion. A case study by Heaney (1998), there is a large drop of forest cover after the 1850 where plantations began to increase. Figure 1-1 shows the relationship between forest cover and the population in the specific area.

This will be the reference mode of the proponents study, which is the behavior of forest covered throughout time.

1.2. Scope and Limitation
1.2.1. Scope
· The study will focus only on factors that directly affect deforestation
· The proponents will be focusing more on logging issues
1.2.2. Limitation
· The proponents are limited to the reading that they were able to research. Actual observations were not done by the proponents
· Inputs will be based on theoretical maturity with regards to growth of trees
1.3. Problem Statement
There is an increase in deforestation rate in the Philippines from year 1850 – 2000 which led low percentage area of forest covered.
